A TOUCH of colour and shine, but most importantly safety, has been welcomed in Sunshine with the reopening of the Sunshine bus interchange last week.
The new interchange has been designed to create a safer, easier and more interesting place for commuters to catch the bus.
The Regional Rail Link project includes a new configuration for the bus stops, landscaping, improved CCTV and lighting and a new pedestrian crossing.
Footscray- Deer Park project team general manager Steve Cornish said the re-opening was an important milestone in the transformation of the Sunshine station precinct.
“There has been a lot of activity in the precinct in recent months, and we are very pleased that bus passengers will soon start to experience the benefits of the upgrade,” Mr Cornish said.
Mr Cornish said the works would continue over the coming months to fully complete the interchange.
A key feature of the newly reopened interchange is a bright, engaging mural designed in consultation with the Brimbank Youth Services Urban Art program.
Public artists Sansern ‘Zood’ Rianthong and Michael O’Dwyer collaborated to create ‘dot’, which is based on the three elements people, place and dreams.
The art work hides 10 figures that represent the youth group standing with their mentors.
Each figure is hidden within the mural and only known to each individual.
The artists hoped the secret gave each person involved a sense of pride when they passed it.
Mr Cornish said the artwork was the first of several artworks and imagery incorporated into the new infrastructure delivered by the community identity program.
The program, which was established earlier this year by the Footscray- Deer Park project team in collaboration RMIT University School of Art, included representatives from Brimbank and Maribyrnong councils.
