Get your skates on

By NICOLE VALICEK

THE Laverton Skate Centre is turning 30 and will celebrate the significant occasion in true roller style.
The iconic roller disco is one of just four purpose-built roller rinks still operating in Victoria. The centre was opened on Thursday 7 July 1983 as “West End Roller Disco” by the local Inserra and De Petro families.
New owners and avid skaters Bryan and Linda Bergman have started sprucing up the centre, with many new improvements already complete.
“Linda and I constantly hear how much fun people had here as children, so it’s a pleasure to see them returning with their own children all over again,” Bryan said.
“We aim to preserve that experience with a safe, family-friendly venue hosting activities the whole family can participate in, no matter the weather.”
The centre’s 30th birthday party will be celebrated on its actual birthday, Sunday 7 July from 10.30am-3.30pm with a host of attractions for all the family.
As part of celebrations an all-’80s pop soundtrack will be playing as people reminisce and share skating exploits.
“Rollerskating is not only fun, it’s a fun and exciting low-impact alternative to traditional exercise options, providing a complete aerobic workout involving all the body’s muscles, especially the heart,” Bryan said.
“The centre provides our community with sporting options for both children and adults such as roller derby and hockey, plus skating is a fantastic cardio exercise for the whole body.”
To celebrate there will be a fund-raising sausage sizzle for the not-for-profit Westside Derby Dollz, Dora the explorer and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles character appearances for the kids, children’s face-painting and a balloon artist.
The Victoria Roller Derby League will put on a Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ display on skates. Dress in ’80s costume to enter the best 1980s costume prize. The original rink owners will also stop in for a meet and greet visit on the day.
