A PERMANENT exhibition that has intrigued and awed the minds of anyone who visits Scienceworks museum is retiring to make way for the new.
The highly interactive House Secrets will close on 14 July after a decade inside the interactive museum in Spotswood.
Senior Curator, Science Communication Museum Victoria Kate Phillips helped research and develop the House Secrets exhibition and said the exhibition was an opportunity to explore the science in the everyday.
She said the idea behind the exhibition was to examine the science and technology of all aspects of the home, and those that are often overlooked.
It does this by using quirky and fun displays and props. From a giant staircase to an oversized bed and bed bugs, Ms Phillips said these everyday household objects when put on display spark curiosity among the otherwise norm.
“(They) bring fun and humour to the topics dealt with seriously in other spheres,” she said.
“It just revealed the science in everyday life, for many of our visitors it’s both intriguing, it makes science approachable, to show them that it’s not only done in laboratories it’s something around you.”
“By understanding a bit more about it can be useful in everyday life.”
Best described as a magnified version of a house Ms Phillips said like all the exhibitions at the museum its main goal is to inspire children and adults to be interested in the world around them.
She said House Secrets will be missed but it no doubt did its job to keep audiences interested and minds ticking by delving into the unknown of everyday life in homes.
“It reveals the science we take for granted, how does a fridge get cool, how does a vacuum cleaner, work, part of everyday lives when you can have a play with them you learn that’s how it works.”
“It’s a lovely quirky exhibition. It’s quite a rich exhibition both for children and adults, we’ll be sad to see it go.”
House Secrets will be departing to make way for a new and exciting exhibition called Think Ahead.
The new exhibition will be open in time for the school holidays on 4 December 2013.
