The 25-year-old woman suffered serious facial injuries after being punched several times during the incident, which occurred after she left Ginifer Railway Station.
Police said the woman was walking along Camara St when she noticed a man behind her about 10pm.
The woman started to run but the man punched her head and knocked her to ground.

However the woman kicked and punched her attacker, who retaliated by hitting her in the face several times before running away.
The woman managed to stagger to a house on Camara St and raised the alarm. She was taken to Footscray Hospital and was treated for a broken eye socket and nose.
The offender was described as approximately 25 years old, around 165cm tall with a slim-to-medium build and short dark hair.
