BRIMBANK’S older residents are in for fun and frivolity as the state celebrates the Victorian Seniors Festival next week.
The festival celebrates 30 years in 2012 and includes eight days of free public transport for Victorian Seniors Card holders, as well as a calendar jam-packed with free or discounted events.
Opening day celebrations at Federation Square will include roving entertainment and performances from names like Kutcha Edwards.
Local choirs from around the state will perform at the BMW Edge while stalls and dance programs keep crowds busy.
Activities also include tours of some of Victoria’s best sites, a concert program at Melbourne Town Hall and open days from Tennis Victoria and Bowls Victoria.
Brimbank City Council’s acting manager of community wellbeing Neil Whiteside said the festival acknowledged and celebrated the contribution senior residents make to the community.
“Brimbank Seniors Festival provides seniors with the opportunity to participate in a range of activities that they may not have experienced before and feel better connected to the broader community,” Mr Whiteside said.
The council’s own calendar will kick off with a seniors dance featuring guest speaker AFL legend Tommy Hafey.
Other events include the Brimbank U3A open day, swimming and fitness activities at Brimbank leisure centres and come and try fun with pottery and watercolour workshops, literary bingo and a day out at the Keilor Golf Course.
Victorian Seniors Week runs from Sunday 7 October to Sunday 14 October. For more information visit www.seniorsonline.vic.gov.au
