Green, but ready

The North Melbourne resident is set to contest the seat of Kororoit at the State Election, after last week being officially endorsed as the Australian Greens candidate.
A newcomer to politics, the novice will face an uphill battle to win the safe seat, which has been held by Labor since it was created in 2002.
The seat is held by Marlene Kairouz, who enjoyed an easy victory in the June 2008 Kororoit by-election.
A law student at Melbourne University, Ms Smietanka became interested in politics after joining a Greens animal welfare working group.
A Taylors Lakes local for more than 15 years, the aspiring politician said she was passionate about the West and would work to give residents a voice if elected.
A paralegal at a law firm specialising in immigration and refugee law, Ms Smietanka said issues such as social justice and equality were high on her agenda.
She promised to remain involved in council and community issues if her election bid is successful.
She cited public transport improvements, education and increased community safety as key areas she would be working towards.
Despite her youth, Ms Smietanka said she was confident she had the right qualifications to become an MP.
“I think if anything, the younger you are, the more idealistic, passionate and energetic you are,” Ms Smietanka said.
“I think it’s important in politics to have a wide range of people from different ages and walks of life represented.”
Ms Smietanka said she was not daunted by her first foray into politics.
“If anything, I’m excited because I see this as my chance to be a voice to the voiceless in the community.”
