Former Hobsons Bay Detective Inspector John Kapetanovski passed away last week.
The detective, who was known as ‘Kappa’ by his friends, became a hero in 1986 when he was shot while apprehending the notorious gunman Max Clarke.
Clarke, who was dubbed Mad Max, was wanted after shooting four policemen when Kapetanovski and Sergeant Rod MacDonald honed in on him in Wallan.
Both officers were awarded the Victoria Police Valour Award for their bravery.
Hobsons Bay Inspector Bill Mathers said Mr Kapetanovski was a very well-known and respected member of Victoria Police.
Mr Kapetanovski was laid to rest last Thursday at the Police Academy Chapel in Glen Waverley.
“A large contingent of police from the western suburbs went and paid their last respects to John, because even though he had retired, he did leave a legacy and will be remembered for his work in future generations,” Insp Mathers said.
Mr Kapetanovski is survived by his wife and four children.
