Rock of comedy

By NICOLE VALICEK

SOME say comedians are frustrated rock stars.
A different side of the comedy marvels will be revealed at the Comedy Festival venue of Newport’s The Substation.
Opera diva, comedian and cabaret star Ali McGregor will bring together a bunch of her comedic friends from the Comedy Festival and some that aren’t to sing their favourite lullabies.
The one-off night will raise money for Western Chances, supporting young people in Melbourne’s West.
“It is a lovely opportunity to sing a serious song that means something to (the comedians) and show a different side,” Ms McGregor said.
Now in its sixth year this year promises to be filled with surprise duets, moving anecdotes, accidental hilarity and most of all beautiful music in a fantastic venue only 20 minutes from the Festival Hub.
“I’m quite excited because you don’t know what will happen on the night.”
McGregor said each year is unique with some spontaneous and unforgettable moments created when these comedians who “all want to be rock stars” show the audience a genuine side to their personality.
“There’s always these unique moments you don’t hear anywhere else.”
In previous years Fiona O’Loughlin moved her audience to tears by her performance of ‘O Danny Boy’, Adam Hills’ charmed with his rendition of Clancy of the Overflow and enchanted by Tim Minchin’s songs of home.
Guests for this year include Sammy J, Mike McLiesh, DeAnne Smith, Benn Bennett, Marney McQueen, Queenie Van der Zandt, Virginia Gay and Geraldine Quinn, with more to be added to the bill.
