ROUND one of the 2013 VFL season was one to remember for Werribee forward Ben Warren, who booted 11 goals to lead his Tigers team-mates to a 72-point win over Port Melbourne. After both teams finished inside the top four last year, the match looked like it would be a tight contest on paper. However, an inspired Werribee got the early jump and never looked back.
The Tigers opened up a 25-point lead in the first quarter, with Warren and new recruit Scott Clouston both looking dangerous up forward.
From there the margin only grew, with the Werribee players refusing to take their feet off the pedal with the lure of a big percentage boost on offer.
The Tigers added six goals in the second quarter, eight goals in the third and another six goals in the final term on their way to the 25.9 (159) to 12.15 (87).
On a day when Werribee was spoilt for choice in naming its best players, Warren was the clear stand-out to take top honours after his 11-goal performance.
Clouston also finished the match with three majors while Majak Daw, Addam Maric and Levi Greenwood were the other multiple goal scorers.
For Port Melbourne, Dean Galea kicked four goals while Joshua Scipione was named the club’s best player.
The victory gives Werribee a fast start to the 2013 season with the club’s percentage already 182.76.
Only one other match was played during the opening weekend of the VFL season with reigning premier Geelong taking on Williamstown at Torquay.
The VFL season continues next week with Werribee set to take on the Northern Blues in a night match at Avalon Airport Oval.
It will be the Tigers’ first of two night matches during the early part of the season with Collingwood also making the trip to Werribee the following weekend.
Port Melbourne will look to get its season back on track when the Borough travel to Box Hill to take on the Hawks.
