Spate of car thefts

By NICOLE VALICEK

FIVE cars have been stolen from the Newport and Altona North areas during a spate of robberies that occurred over one week.
The stolen cars were all early 2000s and late 1990s models and parked in the street when the thefts took pace.
Police believe the vehicles were stolen overnight between midnight and 8am, between 16 and 23 March.
The cars were valued at between $5000 and $15,000 and have not been recovered.
At least two of the vehicles are believed to have been unlocked; the method of entry to the other cars is not known.
None have been involved in other crimes.
Hobsons Bay Inspector Richard Paterson said people stole cars for a variety of reasons, including joyriding, but also to use as transport to commit other crimes. “These offences not only affect the owners of the cars, but have the potential to cause safety issues to other road users,” Insp Paterson said.
He said it was a stern warning for the community to ensure vehicles were always locked and if parked valuables were not within eyesight.
“We urge all residents to be vigilant and lock their cars and if they see anyone acting suspiciously around parked cars to call triple zero for police attendance,” Insp Paterson said.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
