MEMBERS of Friends of Lower Kororoit Creek (FOLKC) have 350,000 reasons to celebrate this week after a new nature park was opened over the weekend.
The $350,000 nature park that includes at 2500 metre walking trail below the Toyota Plant in Altona North was the initiative of the group who obtained a grant through the State Government’s Vision for Werribee Plains program. FOLKC president Geoff Mitchelmore told Star he was excited to finally see the park opened.
“It’s exciting and an amazing project and to see it come from a barren land full of thistles to a nature park is brilliant,” Mr Mitchelmore said.
Mr Mitchelmore said the partnerships between Toyota, Hobsons Bay City Council and FOLKC were vital to the project’s fruition.
“This is what the government wants to see – these partnerships,” she said.
“State government, local government, businesses and the community – this is why they support these projects.”
The project has been several years in the making and Mr Mitchelmore estimates more than at 1200 hours in volunteer man hours has been spent working on the project between 100-150 volunteers.
