Rewarding read in Brimbank

BRIMBANK library users get more bang for their buck, a recent study has shown.
The Dollars, Sense and Public Libraries report, commissioned by Public Libraries Network Victoria and State Library of Victoria, looked at the economic stimuli introduced into local economies through public libraries.
For every dollar invested in Brimbank’s libraries the return for the local community was valued at $4.20. On average, $3.56 of benefits were returned to the local community for every dollar invested.
“It’s no secret that our libraries are well used and highly valued by our community, but it is gratifying to have an independent body reiterate the value of the service we provide to the community,” Brimbank’s chief administrator Peter Lewinsky said.
More than 90,000 people, around half of Brimbank’s population, are members of the city’s libraries, with more than 100,000 visits recorded in a typical month and 140,000 books borrowed.
“Our collections are very well utilised, with 25 per cent of our collection on loan to the community at any given time,” Mr Lewinsky said.
Offering nearly 200 programs a month, Mr Lewinsky said Brimbank’s focus is providing something for everyone.
“We are particularly proud of our multi-lingual collection, which comprises 17 languages including English. Our online library is also available in English, Arabic, Chinese and Vietnamese.”
