IT BEGAN with a simple hit on the green six years ago.
Hoppers Crossing resident Tony Ebejer went along to a golf day to help raise money for the Sunshine Rotary club.
His team won the day and Rotary won a new member.
Tony was elected as the new president of the club last week and is keen to give back to the Brimbank community he was born and raised in.
“It’s a challenge, obviously, but if I can do any good at it, then it’s good for the club and for the community,” Tony said.
Some of Sunshine Rotary’s activities include fundraising for multiple sclerosis support and research, youth camps and the school scholarship named after founding member Ray Carlton.
The 44-year-old said the club currently had 21 members but was hoping to attract more through the Friends of Rotary, a new initiative that allows people to “help when they can” without a full membership.
He said the group, which meets each Tuesday for lunch, was largely made up of business people and retirees, but welcomed people of all ages.
“That question, why should people join, is thrown around a lot in Rotary,” he said.
“But once you get involved, you’re helping people and it’s just… it’s fantastic.”
The Sunshine Rotary Club meets each Tuesday at 12.30 at the Deer Park Hotel.
