THE first concept design for the new $55 million Community and Civic Centre was unveiled by Brimbank Council last week.
The new facility, which will be at the site of the current Sunshine library, will be home to the library and will also house a community meeting and gathering space, spaces for government service providers and council staff, and car parking.
Chair of Brimbank administrators John Watson said the preliminary concept design further signalled the transformation that would occur in Sunshine over the coming years.
Mr Watson said the project was an all-round win for all Brimbank residents.
“More than 400,000 visits were made to Sunshine Library in 2012-2013 and more than 12,000 people attended the 674 programs held at what is one of Victoria’s busiest libraries, and the busiest in Brimbank,” Mr Watson said.
“The ability to significantly upgrade the library space is very satisfying,” Mr Watson said.
Brimbank Council hopes the designs will be completed at the start of the New Year to allow for construction work to start by the end of July 2014.
With this schedule, the council anticipates the building will be completed by the end of June 2016.
Mr Watson said the council looked forward to creating the state-of-the-art library and enhancing community space at Sunshine.
Mr Watson said the design was still at the conceptual stage and architects would continue to work with a range of stakeholders to further refine the design.
Staff from the Keilor and Hertford Road offices will also move to the new facility.
“This will not only increase productivity and save money into the future, but very importantly, it opens up an opportunity to provide Keilor with more and improved community space,” Mr Watson said of the move.
