Thieves cash in on coins

DETECTIVES from Maribyrnong’s Crime Investigation Unit are investigating thefts from parking meters and the theft of public pay phones across Footscray and Sunshine since July. Unknown offenders have targeted 18 parking meters, particularly in the streets surrounding Footscray’s Western Hospital, since 21 July.
More than $3000 in coins has been stolen from these meters. Meanwhile, unknown offenders have also unbolted nine pay phones from phone booths and stolen the whole unit.
Each of the nine pay phones stolen has been valued at $3000, while it has been estimated that approximately $1300 in coins was in the pay phones. Police are urging anyone with information about these thefts to call Crime Stoppers on 1300 333 000.
