A YOUNG orchestra will bring some Christmas cheer to shopping centres in Brimbank and Melton next month.
Members of the Mozartini Orchestra, Australia’s youngest known children’s orchestra, are aged between three and 13 years old.
The orchestra was started by director of the Music Education Academy (MEA) in Delahey, Lorenzo Capitanio.
He named the orchestra Mozartini – which translates to ‘Little Mozarts’ – after the world’s most famous child prodigy, composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
“With the year quickly drawing to an end it is time to wind down and let the spirit of Christmas take over, which is exactly what the Music Education Academy students will be doing over the coming weeks,” Mr Capitanio said.
He said the Mozartinis would be performing Christmas carols and popular songs at shopping centres like Watergardens during the festive season.
“These children have been working hard throughout the year undertaking music examinations and performing in their annual fund-raising concerts and now are looking forward to the fun and excitement of these community Christmas performances,” he said.
“It’s a great way to end the year of wonderful music-making and learning for these young musicians and a great way to give back to our community.
“The orchestra began in 2008 with its first public performance at Delahey McDonalds in support of McHappy Day with five performers and now the orchestra can have over 20 young musicians in a given show.”
The orchestra has raised more than $14,000 for charity in the past seven years through concerts.
The group has also played at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, the Royal Children’s Hospital and Sunshine Hospital.
The Mozartini Orchestra’s first Christmas performances will be on at the Watergardens Town Centre in Sydenham on Tuesday 3 and Wednesday 4 December starting at 3.30pm and 4.30pm.
