INTERNATIONAL Women’s Day will be celebrated in Sunshine this Friday with dancing and a documentary.
Women’s Health West (WHW) has organised the event in conjunction with Brimbank City Council, Maribyrnong City Council and Phoenix Youth Centre.
The event will feature free performances from the B-Breaks Dance Program, Bitsat Aberh, Grace Vanilau and other artists from 4.30pm to 6.30pm, with supper provided.
Afterwards, a fund-raising screening of the documentary, ’I Am A Girl’ will be held with all proceeds going to Women’s Health West.
The event will fundraise for WHW to move from their Footscray offices to a new building where they can continue to provide services to women and children experiencing family violence.
The not-for-profit group works with women from Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melbourne, Melton, Moonee Valley and Wyndham.
WHW CEO Dr Robyn Gregory said, ’I Am A Girl’ portrayed stories of strength and courage through a day in the life of six young women around the world.
‘Women everywhere are more likely than men to be under-valued, under-paid and unemployed, victims of family violence and to be single parents,” she said.
“Intimate partner violence is the major cause of death for Victorian women aged 15-44.
“These are some of the reasons that International Women’s Day is a vital opportunity to stop and consider what we must still achieve, but also to celebrate our many accomplishments.”
