M80 RING RD users are being warned to expect detours and delays as works continue on the $2.25 billion upgrade during October.
Project director Sebastian Motta said the M80 Ring Rd would close overnight for Greensborough-bound traffic between the Calder Freeway and Airport Drive at Keilor Park from 8.30pm on Sunday 9 and 5am on Monday 10 October.
“We need to close the freeway to install support bases for the overhead signs which will span the Altona and Greensborough bound lanes,” Mr Motta said.
“The seven-metre high sign structures weigh up to 20 tonnes and will carry elements of
the new electronic freeway management system being installed to improve traffic flow
on the M80 Ring Road.”
Mr Motta said M80 Ring Rd drivers heading towards Greensborough should plan their
trip as they will be detoured at Keilor Park Drive, while access to the Calder Freeway city-bound will continue.
“We ask drivers to check the VicRoads website for details of the closure and detours and to leave a bit earlier, particularly if heading to the airport,” he said.
“While freeway closures are inconvenient, they are only used when it is not safe to work close to live traffic.”
“We thank drivers and residents for their ongoing patience, as works continue to
improve safety and reduce travel times on one of Melbourne’s key transport corridors.”
Works are now are now under way on 16 kilometres of the Ring Rd, with extra lanes between Calder Freeway and Sydney Rd expected to open by the end of next year.
