WITH last week’s intrepid weather, one could have be forgiven for believing the winter months had not ended, however a group of Brimbank youngsters were still more than happy to don their bathers and have a swim.
And these Brimbank residents will be joined by many more teenagers when they enjoy the Summer Nights program of pool parties and movie screenings and a youth forum.
Summer Nights is part of the Federal Government’s $165,000 program aimed at reducing binge drinking and offers a variety of events for only a gold coin donation.
Peter Lewinsky, chair of Brimbank administrators, said the council was committed to addressing the needs of younger residents.
“For one thing, young people in Brimbank have the numbers – 25 per cent of residents are between the ages of 10 and 24, with strikingly high numbers in the 10 to 19 group,” Mr Lewinsky said.
“We want young people to have the opportunity to spend time with their friends and meet other young people from their community.”
Mr Lewinsky said initiatives like Summer Nights were so important and provided fun and safe activities in places like St Albans Square, Tallintyre Reserve and Errington Reserve.
“Many of the events involve music – a big drawcard for young people.”
Several activities, including some of the pool parties, are girls-only events.
October kicks off with a pool party today at Sunshine Leisure Centre, a movie day at Sydenham Library this Thursday and a youth forum at St Albans Square, this Saturday October 6 between 3 and 6pm.
The maiden ‘Girls Only Pool Party’ at Sunshine Leisure Centre will take place on Saturday, 15 October. Food and music will be on offer.
