Man’s head axed on Australia Day

A MAN was attacked with a meat cleaver – or similar weapon – in Spotswood on Australia Day.

The 41-year-old Footscray man suffered serious head injuries after the incident which occurred on 26 January in McNeilage St.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman told Star ambulance officers arrived at the premises to find a man laying outside the front of the property.

“Apparently three men spent most of the day consuming alcohol and were out the front of an address in Spotswood,” the spokeswoman said.

“Around 9.40pm an ambulance was called and the paramedics arrived and found a man on the ground with a serious heard wound.

“He was bleeding heavily but it’s not known who called the ambulance.”

The man was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital and police arrived at the scene at around 9.50pm.

“A man was located sleeping in a caravan at the front of the address,” the Victoria Police spokeswoman said.

“A 26-year-old Williamstown man was arrested and taken to Williamstown Police Station and interviewed in relation to the incident and was released pending further queries.”

Members of the Melton Crime Investigation Unit, who also attended the crime scene, are investigating the serious assault.

Aside from the Spotswood assault, Hobsons Bay Police Inspector, Richard Paterson, said police were pleased with the way most residents conducted themselves on Australia Day.

“There was a big focus on the Australia Day weekend across the state, because it can certainly be a period where assaults and anti-social behaviour can be high,” he said.

“But we were very satisfied with the behaviour in Hobsons Bay across the Australia Day weekend.”
