NBN rollout continues

By VANESSA VALENZUELA

SELECTED suburbs in Melbourne’s West will soon have faster internet access with works on National Broadband Network (NBN) scheduled to start within the next 12 months.

Residents living in Albanvale, Kealba, Keilor Down, Kings Park and St Albans are next in line to receive the NBN before January 2014.

NBN Co recently commenced construction at 10 new locations across the country, and the rollout of fibre optic network commenced in Footscray for the first time this month.

The NBN aims to provide faster, more reliable broadband with free standard connection to homes and businesses.

The new rollout map reveals Melton West, Werribee, Wyndham Vale and West Footscray will also receive the NBN in the next 12 months.

NBN Co CEO Mike Quigley said the maps signal to residents and businesses when they will able to benefit from the upgrade and take advantage of high-speed internet.

New figures released by NBN Co last week reveal the number of homes and businesses using the National Broadband Network hit 34,500 in December last year, rising from only 13,600 in June 2012.

Mr Quigley said the results reflect progress in the early stages of the rollout and what the company expected within the given timeframe.

“We are targeting to pass more premises in the final quarter of the financial year than we will have passed in the entire project up to the beginning of that quarter,” he said.

“Additional construction resources will be added over the coming months to help achieve these targets.”

The company’s target is to rollout the NBN at 341,000 new and existing premises with fibre-optic cable by June this year.
