Safety upgrades for boat ramps

BOAT ramps in Altona and Newport will be upgraded thanks to $400,000 in funding provided by the State Government and Hobsons Bay City Council.

The Minister for Ports, Denis Napthine visited the Altona boat ramp to announce the projects last Friday.

He said $192,000 would be spent upgrading lighting at the Warmies boat ramp in Newport.

In addition $200,000 will go towards improving the Altona boat ramp trailer car park and overflow car park.

“The Warmies boat ramp at Newport operates 24 hours a day all year so upgrading the lighting is an essential project to ensure that users can launch and retrieve their vessels safely,” Mr Napthine said.

“The existing light poles at Warmies are corroded and do not meet current standards so this project will see 14 new galvanised poles installed plus 16 new aero-screen lights.

“The works at Altona include the installation of an additional 10 car and trailer parking bays plus realignment and resurfacing of the overflow car park which will improve traffic flow, congestion and pedestrian safety.”

Hobsons Bay Mayor Angela Altair welcomed the funding announcement.

“The Warmies and Altona boat ramps are two of the few entry points to Port Phillip Bay in the west and popular with boating and fishing enthusiasts,” Cr Altair said.
