A MAN who allegedly set fire to a Sunshine West property last Monday has been arrested by police.
Sunshine CIU Senior Sergeant Fred Grove said police were called to the Glengala Rd home at around 3.30pm by a male allegedly stating he was going to burn the residence down.
“The MFB attended at the address given and allegedly found a male person who had poured accelerant – petrol – on the garden and actually set fire to it,” Sen Sgt Grove said.
“It wasn’t a significant fire in size, it just burned the garden plants.
“The MFB decided to put it out and the man allegedly became verbally aggressive towards them and threatened that he was armed with a knife.”
Police also arrived at the scene and the male again allegedly said he was armed with a knife and would harm anyone who came near him.
“Police deployed OC (capsicum) spray, overpowered him and handcuffed him,” Sen Sgt Grove said.
The 42-year-old offender was taken Sunshine Police Station and underwent a psychiatric assessment.
He was remanded on charges relating to intent to cause serious injury and will appear at a later date at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.
Sen Sgt Grove said an elderly male resident inside the home at the time of the alleged fire was uninjured.
Anyone who witnessed the incident can contact Sergeant Callum McCann at Sunshine Police Station on 9313 3333 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
