FOR Hailey Maher creating her first piece of artwork was life-changing.
The 16-year-old Sunshine resident who had never painted before said the sense of freedom she felt was like nothing she had ever experienced before.
Hailey’s work will be on display as part of the ‘Own It’ youth exhibition this Thursday.
The exhibition will showcase original pieces created by participants of the Urban Art and Design Project, which is being delivered by Brimbank Youth Services.
Young Hailey said when she was approached to take part in the program she jumped at the opportunity.
“It takes your mind off things,” she said.
“No-one can tell you what is right and wrong. I felt like nothing else mattered.”
The talented teenager, who also enjoys photography, said using spray paint was especially liberating.
“It was a way to express myself.
“It gives people a chance to see what’s inside of me.”
She said the exhibition would show people just how talented local youth really were.
“We can work it too. It’s a way for us to escape and be happy.”
Visitors to the exhibition will have an opportunity to view the artwork and listen to artists speak.
It will be held this Thursday 7 April, from 4.30pm to 6.30pm at Visy Cares Hub, 80B Harvester Rd, Sunshine.
