LAVERTON is the first setting for a State Government program that will give young people a say in the allocation of community resources.
Education and Training Minister Lynne Kosky launched the new Youth Foundations program on Friday at the Laverton Civic Centre.
Ms Kosky said a local partnership group would use the interest from the funding to make grants to young people to run activities to benefit the whole community.
Outcomes could include educational, social and community action initiatives such as putting on concerts or public artworks.
Ms Kosky announced $225,000 government support for the initiative to be developed in Laverton, with $105,000 to be matched by the Laverton and Altona Meadows Community Bank, branches of the Bendigo Bank.
Youth foundations will be established in 15 communities across Victoria.
“In each location, a group of young people from different backgrounds will come together to examine the needs of their communities,” Ms Kosky said.
