SUPERANNUATION doesn’t spring to mind when you think of making blockbuster movies.
But for one Kings Park resident this may be his ticket to stardom.
George Makrynakis recently received a $3000 grant from the Australian Taxation Office after his film, The Secret Piggybank, won the short film competition during National Youth Week.
The media student’s film depicted a wise old man who would save money for his grandson and how this simple idea literally paid off in the end.
“Saving is important,” the 20-year-old said.
“We know we should be saving, but we don’t do it.
“By the time we realise we should be saving it’s too late.”
George, who studies at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, said the grant will go towards making more short films and he hoped to one day make it big in the cut-throat movie industry.
“It’s always been my dream.
“When I first got the idea of making films, I thought there was a fair bit of glamour involved but now I just love doing it and having people appreciate the work I do.”
The competition was the ATO’s first youth specific campaign and was part of a broader strategy to engage directly with young Australians.
