MEMBERS of the Melton Bacchus Marsh Diabetes Support Group are getting set to don their walking shoes and raise awareness of diabetes within the community as part of World Diabetes Day on 14 November.
By participating in the Global Diabetes Walk, support groups across Victoria will provide their members with an opportunity to get together and enjoy some gentle exercise and spread the word on diabetes, a disease that affects 235,000 people in Victoria with another 450 new cases developing every week.
Convenor of the Melton Bacchus Marsh Diabetes Support Group Jeann Clarke said walking was easy and good for people’s health.
“The Global Diabetes Walk gives our support group the chance to come together and be active. Walking together also gives our group the opportunity to raise awareness of World Diabetes Day and our profile in the community,” Jeann said.
She said the support group was a great way for people with diabetes to meet each other and learn from different experiences.
“People who attend support groups find the group aspect important as it helps them to be more positive in managing their diabetes.”
The group will meet at 11am on Thursday 14 November at the Melton City Council car park to begin their walk.
