DUE to her tireless volunteer work, Monika Friedrich’s friendly smile is familiar to many residents in Brimbank and beyond.
Ms Friedrich, of St Albans, said many people wave and greet her whenever she goes shopping.
Since 1985 she has been member of the Austrian Club Melbourne which is based in Heidelberg West.
In addition, she volunteers on a weekly basis at the Brotherhood of St Laurence opportunity shop on the border of Burnside and Deer Park.
“I love it because you make very nice friends,” Ms Friedrich, a grandmother of four, said.
Also in her busy schedule she leads two warm-water exercise groups at the Sunshine Pool every week for Arthritis Victoria.
Mrs Friedrich is presently serving as secretary of the Austrian Club Melbourne.
“We have around 400 people of all nationalities in the club. As long as you’re a nice person, you are welcome,” she said.
“People join for the friendly atmosphere.
Once a week, Ms Friedrich does ‘official duty’ at the club, which often holds musical events, serves traditional middle European food and has ‘beautiful cake’ for sale at Cafe Mozart.
“You get to know the people who come every Sunday for lunch and have a dance afterwards,” Ms Friedrich said.
“You get to know their faces, know their likes and dislikes, and they get to know me too.
“On the committee, we need more young people.
“Lately we have gotten a new 21-year-old lady. She is 21 and she likes the club, she helps out and she likes the atmosphere.”
