WHEN Mary Sabotkoski found out she was expecting twins, she was surprised and understandably a little nervous.
The Burnside Heights resident remembers the feeling of “utter shock” at the realisation she would not only be dealing with the needs and the crying, of one baby, but two.
“My husband was over the moon, but I was in utter shock. It was completely overwhelming,” she said.
Thankfully the pregnancy and birth went well and Mary, a first-time mum, was able to leave the hospital with her two bundles of joy.
But she said as much as it was a wonderful occasion, it was also a daunting experience.
“I was really fearful to be left alone … something just as simple as popping out to the shops worried me,” she said.
With the help of her loving husband and family Mary got through the first couple of months.
But she soon realised she also needed support of mothers she could relate to and who could offer help and advice.
That’s when she decided to join the North West Multiple Birth Club Twins Playgroup session in Caroline Springs.
“I had nothing to lose … I needed someone to talk to and I needed reassurance,” she said.
“I also wanted to know what was in store for me.”
Mrs Sabotkoski said the group has helped her form friendships and the social aspect of leaving her home and interacting with other mothers is priceless.
She the group also has a Facebook site which allows parents to post questions and receive on-the-spot responses.
“I would encourage other mums to join the group. Being able to relate to other parents is so important,” she said.
The playgroup is held on Fridays from 10am-noon at Springside Children’s and Community Centre, Becca Way, Caroline Springs.
