STAR Williamstown recruit Mathew Inness believes he will only get better as the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association season continues.
The former Victorian and Western Australian state cricketer has taken six wickets from his first three matches this season and kept his economy rate to less than three runs per over.
However, after missing the 2011/12 season, Inness knows he is just working up to his best.
“I probably didn’t have too many goals at the start of the year in terms of wickets or runs and things like that,” he said.
“I just wanted to get down and try and help the club improve on last year and try to help develop some players,” he said.
“It is good to get a few wickets but I didn’t play at all last year so I think it will just take a while to get back to what I know I can do.
“My pace probably still isn’t quite what it could be so it will take me a little while to adjust. It is good to get some wickets but I know I can still give a bit more I think.”
After dropping its first two games of the season, Inness said he was confident the side would be able to rebound quickly.
The resurgence may have already started after the Seagulls posted a huge win over Malvern on Saturday.
“Obviously we have had a couple of close losses but in terms of enjoyment it has been really good,” he said.
“I think we can turn it around pretty quickly. We have been really competitive in the games and just a couple of things haven’t gone our way where we have had the worst of the conditions. We have stuck in the game and I’m pretty sure we will turn it around.”
After a total of 81 first class matches between the Bushrangers and the Warriors, Inness said it was unlikely he would make a return to Premier Cricket but didn’t rule it out entirely.
“Because I didn’t play last year I had a couple of Premier Clubs approach me and I didn’t know whether I could give the commitment so I thought subbies was a good way to get back into it,” he said.
“At this stage I’m happy at Willy and I think just with the commitment for Premier Cricket, it might be a bit much but you never know.”
