WILLIAMSTOWN Musical Theatre Company Inc is asking audiences to think about the question ’to pee or not to pee’ in its latest production.
Imagine a town where there is virtually no water left.
Private restrooms no longer exist and everyone is forced to pay to use the town’s only public facility.
Such is the life in Urinetown, where a 20-year drought has made it hard for residents to get relief.
Williamstown Musical Theatre Company Inc is proud to present Urinetown – highly satirical, tongue-in-cheek tale of big-city greed, corruption and romance on the wrong side of the law.
In this user-pays world, two young people meet and fall in love, Hope and Bobby.
Hope is the optimistically naive daughter of water magnate Caldwell B Cladwell, and the revolutionary Bobby Strong, who inspires the disaffected populace with his forthright conviction that no one ought to be forced to pee at someone else’s convenience.
The character of Bobby Strong, played by Werribee local Marco Fusco was included on New York Theatre Monthly’s list of “The 100 Greatest Roles in Musical Theatre”.
Director Anna Marinelli said lovers of musical theatre would recognise the writers’ clever comparisons with other musicals like “Les Miserables”, “West Side Story” and “Fiddler on the Roof”.
“Those not familiar with musical theatre and attendance is purely because of intrigue of the title of the show,” she said.
“We hope you will be entertained by the tongue-in-cheek humour and sometimes cynical view of a future where water is worth its weight in gold.”
Urinetown – The Musical opens for a limited season on Friday 8 November and plays until Saturday 23 November at the Williamstown Mechanics Institute.
