STUDENTS were in a flap after they discovered a magpie stuck in a tree at St Albans Heights Primary School last month.
The bird was found dangling from a tree near the Grade 5 and 6 classrooms, with worried students running to the office of Principal George Kalandadse.
Confused as to why students were so worried about a bird in a tree Mr Kalandadse went to inspect and found the bird dangling by its foot, which had become caught in a bit of fishing line that had been used to make its nest.
“It just hung there vertically, flapping,” Mr Kalandadse said.
“I called the fire brigade head office and I thought ‘you’re going to lock me up when I say I have a magpie in a tree’.”
Luckily the dedicated fireys from Sunshine and St Albans MFB brigades came to the rescue.
“The fireman grabbed the bird with his glove, cut the fishing line, and when he put the bird back in the nest there was a round of applause,” Mr Kalandadse said.
He said the school had been very grateful to the firemen for rescuing the “beautiful little magpie”, which was especially appreciated by the principal who is a keen Collingwood supporter.
While the kids celebrated the birds rescue, the fireman rushed off to their next job – apparently a cat was stuck in a drain.
