Crossing cops out in force

VICTORIA Police will enforce road safety around the Main Rd level crossing in St Albans this month.
Police will patrol the area as part of an ongoing campaign to reduce road trauma within Brimbank.
Last year there were 54 collisions involving pedestrians, with 20 serious injuries and three fatalities.
Last month a man in his 40s died at the Main Rd level crossing.
Brimbank Highway Patrol Sergeant Rod Stein said police would work with the community, Brimbank City Council and VicRoads in planning road safety initiatives and improvements, as well as conducting a number of local operations.
Sgt Stein said people found committing road safety offences would receive a fine.
“Drivers can also expect to lose demerits points or even have their licence suspended and possibly face court,” he said.
“In some cases, police can also impound vehicles for at least 30 days.
“The number of drivers and pedestrians disregarding their own safety and the road rules is a real concern – if people obey the simple safety rules, there will be no compromising of safety.”
He said motorists needed to be cautious at rail crossings and not try to “beat the boom gates”, while pedestrians should take care not to be distracted by mobile phones, iPods or other devices.
“I ask you to remember road safety at all times while on or near our roads as either a driver or pedestrian,” Sgt Stein said.
“One mistake by you may cause serious injury or death to another or yourself.”
Across Victoria there were 49 pedestrian deaths in 2011, an increase of 26 per cent from the previous year.
People aged over 70 accounted for 16 pedestrian fatalities or 32 per cent, and an analysis showed pedestrians were at fault in two-thirds of the fatalities.
