Hospital needs a hand

By CHARLENE GATT
FINDING your way around a hospital can be like weaving your way through a maze.
But if you’re at Footscray’s Western Hospital, it’s Nancy Sierzputowski to the rescue.
Ms Sierzputowski, 55, is a volunteer visitor guide whose job is to point you in the right direction.
If you’re very lucky, she will even take you to where you need to go.
The Deer Park resident has been volunteering for the past nine years and is no stranger to Western Hospital. She gave birth to her four children there, and her son was treated at the hospital following a car accident a few years ago.
“I thought it would be nice to help out and give back,” she said.
“If I had more time, I would do more.”
Ms Sierzputowski comes in for four-and-a-half hours every fortnight and encourages other people to volunteer too.
“If you have spare time, if you’re feeling bored or down, come here. You get to meet some really nice people,” she said.
Western Health needs more volunteers like Ms Sierzputowski for three or four hours a week across the Sunshine and Footscray Hospitals.
The volunteers would spend their time visiting patients, working the tea and coffee trolley, working in the opportunity shop, spending time in the emergency department and acting as a visitor guide.
