Track meet proves depth of talent

WESTERN Athletics was not the only club to feature Western Suburbs athletes who excelled at the Victorian Junior Track and Field Championships.
Keilor Downs athlete Ashleigh Hayes, who competes for Athletics Essendon, broke the under-17 women’s Victorian junior triple jump record with a 12.64m leap. She also came third in the long jump.
Team-mate Joel Hogarth, of Williamstown, won the under-20 men’s 800m, while Mate Zahtila (St Albans) easily won the men’s javelin with a throw of 65.07m. Erin Rayner (Taylors Lakes) claimed gold in the under-20 800m.
For Williamstown Athletics Club, Newport’s Catie Hardeman won the under-14 women’s javelin, while Williamstown’s Bradley Ticehurst won silver in the under-16 men’s 100m sprint in a time of 11.31 seconds, 02.7 seconds behind Essendon’s Jilven Dias.
Aidan Williams came third in the men’s under-16 400m final.
Kingsville’s Amelia Mazza-Downie, a Coburg Athletics Club representative, had a superb meet, winning the under-15 women’s 3000m in a blistering time of 10:27.83, and finishing third in the 1500m.
