FOR the third successive week, Werribee was on the end of a thrashing in the Victorian Football League, this time at the hands of Geelong.
In what is one of the competition’s toughest road trips, the Tigers travelled to Simmonds Stadium and felt the full force of a number of Geelong’s AFL listed players putting their hands up for senior selection.
Werribee managed to stick with the Cats early in the contest and went into the first break with a four-point lead.
However, the longer the match went the more the home team asserted its dominance over the contest.
Geelong held a 15-point lead at half time and extended that by a further five points going into the final term.
From there the victory was a runaway as the Cats slammed on eight final quarter goals to Werribee’s two and the margin ballooned out to 55 points.
Nathan Vardy was the star for Geelong, booting six goals while George Burbury also kicked a bag of six.
For Werribee, Ben Warren and Scott Clouston both finished with two goals each in the 21.14 (140) to 12.13 (85) defeat.
Around the ground, Jarred Moore continued his good form since becoming a Tiger and was named the club’s best player while Ben Ross and Levi Greenwood were also solid under constant pressure.
From his six games with Werribee, Moore has been named in the club’s best players on five occasions.
Saturday’s result continues Werribee’s tumble down the ladder after being one of the premiership favourites early in the season.
The Tigers now sit in 11th spot after five games.
Geelong remains undefeated at the top of the ladder.
This week will see Werribee take on Coburg in what is shaping up to be a must-win clash between two sides under pressure early in the season.
