IF YOUR surname is Smith, then you are not alone.
According to the 2012-2013 residential Melbourne White Pages, ‘Smith’ is the most common last name in the Hobsons Bay and Wyndham municipalities.
Smith’s have reigned supreme in both areas for the past three years.
This year Jones was recorded as the second-most popular surname in Hobsons Bay, beating out the other top family names of Singh, Wilson, Brown, Williams, Nguyen and Taylor.
In Wyndham, Tran, Wang and Robinson all appeared on the list for the first time.
Camilleri made its debut on the Hobsons Bay list for the first time but it still has a long way to go before it can push Smith from top spot.
Point Cook mother Samantha swapped her maiden name of Jones when she married and became a Smith.
“I really didn’t put much thought into it but when you fill out a form or tell someone your name down the phone, it makes it very easy as you don’t have to spell it out,” she said.
She is the secretary of the Point Cook Soccer Club which her sons Nathan and Matthew also play for.
The club’s president also has the surname Smith – although he is no relation to Samantha.
The Point Cook Soccer Club will start a senior’s team next year and want to hear from anyone interested in joining up.
Ms Smith said all players would be welcome, regardless of whether they were Smiths or not.
