POLICE are looking for a bungling burglar who, they say, attempted to break into an Altona restaurant, but failed when he fell through the roof.
It is alleged that the man climbed on the roof of the Mosaic Restaurant on Pier St, just after 1.30am on Saturday 13 July.
Police believe the man tried to evade security cameras when he fell through the fabric roofing and landed on furniture in the outdoor dining area before fleeing via the rear of the building.
Owner of Mosaic Restaurant Andrew Sagor said it was difficult not to laugh after watching footage of the failed burglary.
“On the way down, he knocked his head on a table, snapped the legs of the table, damaged the corner of chair got up looked dazed and looked around,” he said.
“It was a mix of a bit of laughter and humour and frustration.”
But, any humour quickly turned to anger knowing the venue had to cater for large function that night.
“I wasn’t happy at all … But a bit of damage can be fixed.”
He said the burglar did not take anything, but it was not the first time the business has been targeted, and they are very vigilant on activities especially around the Lane Way.
Police are seeking assistance to identify the man.
He is described as being 175-180 centimetres tall with a solid build. He was wearing glasses at the time of the offence.
Police have release footage of a man whom they believe may be able to assist in their inquiries.
The burglary follows a slight spike in home burglaries in Hobsons Bay over the last month, with thieves targeting jewellery.
