Caught in Xmas RAID

MORE than 100 drivers were caught breaking the law during a pre-Christmas blitz of Brimbank’s roads.
Officers from Brimbank’s Highway Patrol saturated the city’s streets last weekend as part of Operation RAID, a national initiative aimed at removing drug or alcohol affected drivers from Australian roads.
Police conducted more than 500 breath tests and uncovered 135 offences ranging from speeding to driving while disqualified, or not wearing a seatbelt.
Brimbank Highway Patrol Sgt Rod Stein said the first week of the operation focussed on rogue truck drivers, with police detaining 38 truckies for offences ranging from driving unroadworthy vehicles to failing to properly restrain loads.
“Many of these truck drivers are on the road for 12-14 hours a day, so obviously these are very dangerous matters,” Sgt Stein said.
“We want to make sure that these trucks are being regularly maintained and checked to ensure the safety of all road users.”
The operation will conclude on Saturday.
