A GREAT grandmother has the role of knitting champion stitched up at Taylors Hill Village.
As a member of the retirement village’s craft group, Alice Hewson- who will turn 90 this year – creates knitted toys including Mother and Father Christmas, teddy bears, snowmen and Bananas in Pyjamas.
With 23 great grandchildren, 10 grandchildren and three adult children, the sprightly senior citizen has plenty of family members to knit for.
However, Ms Hewson’s toys will also be on sale at the Taylors Hill Village fund-raising fair on Sunday.
A few weeks before the fair, Ms Hewson showed her woollen creations to friends at the village- much to the delight of some visitors, who purchased the toys on the spot.
“They were going like billyos,” Ms Hewson said.
“I thought, ’I won’t have any left for the fair’.”
Ms Hewson said she did not mind selling her handiwork, despite the hard work that went into the knitting process.
“Not really, I’ve knitted that many of them,” she said.
“I don’t care. I say, ’I work for the village’.”
Ms Hewson has a fairly unique reason for enjoying her knitting past-time.
“It keeps me awake,” she said.
A fellow member of the Taylors Hill Village craft group, Ivie Blake, said people of all ages were interested in knitting.
“I think it’s coming back in – the young ones are knitting more than they were three to four years ago,” she said.
The Taylors Hill Village fair will be on Sunday 13 October from 10am-3pm at 17 Amber Way, Taylors Hill, featuring an afternoon tea with white elephant stall, artificial flower stall, dolls’ clothes, jewellery and a jumping castle.
