YOUNG readers in the Western suburbs are invited to join thousands of young people across Victoria during the Premiers’ Reading Challenge.
Member for Western Metropolitan Region Andrew Elsbury said the Victorian Government was providing over $90,000 so that the Wyndham, Hume, Moonee Valley and Brimbank City Councils could buy hundreds of books to help local people meet the challenge.
In total, more than $575,000 in funding and tens of thousands of books will flow from the Premiers’ Reading Challenge to councils and library corporations across the Melbourne metropolitan region.
“Reading is such a magical experience where you can meet new friends, travel to faraway places and have experiences you can only imagine. This funding will provide more books and a greater opportunity to get reading!” Mr Elsbury said.
The Premiers’ Reading Challenge encourages students to read a minimum number of books by 12 September 2013, including many from a recommended reading list. The minimum number of books for each grade level is:
40 books for pre-school children ;
30 books for Prep to Grade 2 students; and
15 books for readers in Grades 3 to 10.
Books can also be read in languages other than English and editions for the sight impaired.
