A Guide hall in Yarraville that was built in the 50s will get some much-needed attention, thanks to a grant from the Victoria Government.
Member for Western Metropolitan Region Bernie Finn recently announced $85,884 was awarded to the Williamstown Yarraville Girl Guides.
The group will use the funding to remove asbestos sheeting and to install showers, a rain water tank and solar panels to the Guide hall in Yarraville.
Williamstown Yarraville Girl Guides acting district manager Rhonda Jordison said the news made her day.
“It is hard to raise funds for maintenance, it is an ongoing issue,” Mrs Jordison said.
“It’s good for the girls to have an all-girls organisation and that they can do things with a group of girls.”
Mrs Jordison said the Girl Guides movement was important to the community and helped educate young women and develop important life and leadership skills.
“It’s just great that the girls have got somewhere to go.”
“It will be great that we can do extra activities such as sleepover and provide girls with things to do.”
The group currently has more than 40 members with a waiting list for one unit.
Minister for Young Affairs Ryan Smith said the funding would ensure modern facilities to continue the fantastic work in supporting, training and mentoring young Victorians.
“We want to see young Victorians involved in their local community and decision-making, engaged in education, training and employment, and creating culture and enterprise,” Mr Smith said.
