DAVID Cavanagh is preparing for what can only be described as a dream debut. The Caroline Springs footballer will pull on the Big V jumper in the E.J. Whitten Legends game at Etihad Stadium this week.
Cavanagh will line up alongside AFL legends Scott West, Dermott Brereton and Brendan Fevola as Victoria takes on the might of an All Stars line-up featuring the likes of Brodie Holland, Mal Michael and Russell Robertson.
“I didn’t know anything about it so it came as a bit of a surprise,” Cavanagh said.
“My wife actually entered me into it. I was at my son’s footy training and she was down at the clubrooms and she came running out saying, you are playing in the Legends Game. I was just thinking, what are you talking about?
“It was a bit of a shock first of all and I am pretty nervous. I am just hanging to get that Big V jumper. I am really looking forward to that.”
Now in its 18th year, the E.J. Whitten Legends Game aims to raise money for prostate cancer research and to promote the awareness of men’s health.
To date, the event has raised in excess of $1.3 million for the foundation.
As well as past AFL champions, sporting celebrities such as basketball great Chris Anstey and Commonwealth Games gold medallist John Steffensen will also take part in the match.
With excitement levels building at Caroline Springs, Cavanagh is hoping to mix it with some of his heroes.
“As an Essendon supporter I’ve seen (Matthew) Lloyd and (Mark) McVeigh out there. That is a massive highlight for me after always watching them play football,” he said.
“That will be great and hopefully I can hit Lloyd up.
“There are a lot of junior teams at Caroline Springs and we have a lot of friends down at the club and everyone is really excited. They are really behind me. There is even talk that the footy club is organising a couple of buses to get everyone from the club to the game.”
