TWO young people from Hobsons Bay have been celebrated for their creativity and artistic skills.
Hayley Scott and Chris Thorne were recently announced as the junior and senior winners of this year’s Hobsons Bay Youth Art Prize.
The annual Hobsons Bay Youth Arts Prize showcases the work of young Victorian artists aged 12 to 25 years from across the state, with the exhibition open until 14 July.
The exhibition aims to inspire creativity, promote engagement with the arts and challenge different ways of thinking about and imagining our world.
This year more than 150 pieces were submitted with the artworks receiving 8000 views online through Facebook.
Hayley’s winning piece was titled Entirely White and was inspired by Abigail Williams a character in The Crucible that she studied at school.
It was the first time the budding artists had entered her art work into a competition, but said she now looks forward to entering more of her work in the future.
“It was great, it was extremely encouraging and it was flattering because I enjoy art so much, I get a lot out of it, to have other people also supporting me it’s a good feeling,” she said.
Hayley hopes to study fine art at RMIT in the future.
Chris Thorne’s winning painting was titled EGO. Chris said winning the Hobsons Bay Youth Art Prize was a big boost for his self-esteem.
“I’ve entered art competitions in the past and displaying my art work is very rewarding to me.”
Chris is currently working on paintings for his second solo exhibition.
