DAMAGE to a tree and park furniture in Altona last week has cost the Hobsons Bay City Council $2500.
Over the weekend of 28 to 30 June, there was one tree destroyed and one park bench severely damaged in the Pier St/Logan Reserve precinct.
The damage to the tree was extensive and appears to have been done with a chain saw, which would have attracted considerable attention. The park bench in Logan Reserve also had a section cut out and removed.
Hobsons Bay City Council acting director of works and assets Jeff Herz said that while vandalism regrettably does happen, the incident was quite brazen and would have attracted considerable noise and attention.
“The council has received reports of vandalised trees in the past. These mostly occur in areas where uninterrupted views are sought after, such as coastal areas,” he said.
Mr Herz said if the council was aware of a damaged tree, whether by deliberate poisoning or unauthorised pruning, fines could be issued.
In some instances residents require approval to remove trees on private property.
He said the council will erect large signs in place of the damaged tree warning of tree vandalism.
“A replacement tree is also planted, making the act of vandalism senseless.”
The Pier St incident has been reported to Altona North police.
According to the council, trees are important to the community.
“They soften harsh streetscapes, add to property values, improve air quality, provide shade in summer, encourage native birds and other wildlife and give a sense of place,” states the council website.
