KEEPING special needs children entertained is difficult enough but catering for more than 100 from the ages of five to 18 is an even greater challenge.
But it’s a challenge teachers at the Sunshine Special Developmental School face daily.
Based in Sunshine West, the school caters to more than 140 students with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities.
Many of the students also have physical disabilities, sensory impairments and medical conditions.
Due to the diversity of students, the school has created three separate playgrounds for younger, middle and older students.
But while two of the playgrounds are flourishing, the middle playground remains sparse and is in dire need of new equipment.
The school is holding a fundraising dinner this month to raise vital funds to furnish the playground and buy specialised toys to keep students occupied and engaged.
Principal Michael Devereaux said the school hoped to raise $4000 to buy play equipment including balls, outdoor fitness equipment and a trampoline that would be enjoyed by all ages.
“Fundraising events like these are important for us because they allow us to do the extras that make our kids lives better.
“We use a broad range of specialised equipment that is very expensive, so every extra cent we get helps.”
The fundraising dinner will be held at the Waterstone Cafe in Sanctuary Lakes on Sunday 14 November from 6pm to 9pm.
Tickets cost $40 with proceeds going to the school. For more information call 9311 4804.
