ANNIE Cabral is one of six talented students from the Australian Academy of Design who have been selected to showcase their hard work in a graduation fashion runway event.
The Laverton resident who specialises in costume design said the runway is culmination of three years of hard work.
“When you see your clothes on the runway its closure,” she said.
“It’s no longer on a piece of paper, it’s a three dimensional creation on a person.”
The six graduating designers have been nominated to exhibit salon setting, capsule-style collections.
Annie’s selections are all theatre costumes.
The 23-year-old said she is the only person from the course specialising in costume with her fellow students specialising in fashion.
“Making clothes for everyday and evening use is constricting because of the trends you have to worry about,” she said.
“In costume you can create a story out of clothing and you’re not worried about something selling.”
After she graduates Annie hopes to land an internship with Opera Australia.
“I know I want to go into making costumes for the stage.”
Despite her love of fashion and clothing, Annie’s future wasn’t always pointing in the direction of the runway.
Prior to studying at the Australian Academy of Design, Annie was studying European history at Melbourne University.
“Studying history brought up all these rich visuals of what people wore and how they interpret the stage,” she said.
In 2003 Annie was given the opportunity to go to Japan as a Hobsons Bay Youth Delegate.
“Going to Japan got me into textiles – they do amazing things with silks and it got me really into making costumes.”
The runway event will be opened by Laura Anderson, Chairman of the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival on Friday 18 November at 7.30pm.
