Keep it quiet

By Belinda Nolan
A SUNSHINE West transport company has been ordered to quieten down in a bid to give residents a good night’s sleep.
Brimbank Council’s administrators last week demanded Lindsay Transport take action to reduce noise at its Vella Drive site to restore peace and quiet to the neighbourhood.
Residents living in nearby Learmonth Crescent had been complaining about noise stemming from the site since November last year.
The council commissioned an independent noise consultant to conduct testing to determine noise levels at the site.
The consultant took a series of noise readings at the site over five days between 11-15 March, with the results showing that noise levels were of concern.
The acoustic engineer’s report found that recommended noise limits were exceeded at the site on every evening of the testing, reaching as high as 11 decibels over the acceptable levels.
The council has submitted the report to the Environment Protection Authority, urging it to bring the company into line.
The report will be used as evidence in an upcoming Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal hearing into the issue.
The council last week approved a planning permit for works at the site, including replacement of a fuel tank and other works on the condition the company would take measures to reduce noise in the next six months.
Residents had objected to the planning permit, urging the council to knock it back until the company addressed the noise problem.
Administrator Meredith Sussex said the company would have to install an acoustic wall before other works could go ahead.
A planning permit for the wall has yet to be considered.
