High-rise housing bid

FOUR STOREY apartment blocks could be built in Altona Meadows and Spotswood, if Hobsons Bay City Council approves two recent applications.
The council has received two separate planning permit requests for the construction of apartment buildings in Hudsons Rd, Spotswood and Queen St, Altona Meadows.
The Hudsons Rd developers have asked for permission to build 31 apartments and six shops, with basement car parking, near the corner of Forrest St.
The Queen St owners hope to construct 53 dwellings, ranging in heights from two to four storeys, at 390-394 Queen St.
They also want to erect a 24-hour gymnasium and basement car park, with additional at-grade car parking.
Both applicants have asked the council to approve a reduction in the amount of car parks they are required to supply for such large developments.
The Spotswood developers have said they would provide 37 car spaces and 52 bicycle spaces.
Their application provided the council with a traffic assessment of the area, which said they would need up to another 16 car spaces, but there was scope for these vehicles “to be accommodated on street within the vicinity of the subject site”.
The Altona Meadows developers said they would build 53 residential car spaces and six for visitors, plus two for gym staff, along with 15 bicycle spaces.
However, their application said they would not provide any car parks for the gymnasium’s patrons.
Both of the developers’ applications said their projects would help improve the supply of affordable housing within Hobsons Bay.
The Spotswood developers said the price range for their apartments “could start at $300,000” and go up to $500,000 for a two-bedroom home, but the upper levels of the building “could receive higher price, given they may have views towards the West Gate Bridge”.
