AN INNOVATE Newport market is helping mums and dads ensure their children’s pre-loved goods will have a sustainable life.
Husband-and-wife team Faith Symons and Sam Muir bought the business around 18 months ago, and moved its location to the Substation in Newport.
“This iconic building has since become part of our market’s identity,” Ms Symons said.
“The previous owner –and now friend – Emma came up with the market’s name
which is a bit Austin Powers-esque.”
Ms Symons said selling items at the market ensured they would not go to landfill.
“Our bi-monthly market is renowned for having high quality predominantly
pre-loved goods for sale including baby and kids’ clothes, shoes, books, toys,
furniture, other baby paraphernalia and also women’s wear,” she said.
“My husband, Sam and I have worked hard to attract shoppers via our website,
Facebook, Twitter, mailing lists, banners, postcards and posters to ensure
stallholders ideally have a fun and lucrative morning offloading their
goods.”
Ms Symons said most regular stallholders at the ‘Reuse It Baby!’ market came from Hobsons Bay.
The market also has a free stall which not-for-profit groups such as the Hobsons Bay Toy Library and the UCAN Cafe use for fund-raising, by selling cakes and other foods.
“Speaking of fund-raisers, the Williamstown Rotary Group and the 1st Imaroo
Scout Group from Werribee also alternate markets and operate a sausage sizzle
outside,” Ms Symons said.
“Another point of difference in our market is that you actually liaise with a
person with whom you can ask questions, as opposed to selecting a stall from a
booking engine requiring instant payment.”
The next market will be on Sunday 26 July. See www.reuseitbaby.com.au for more information.
